GREGORIO DEL PILAR, Ilocos Sur – A mural depicting the famous battle between the advancing American forces and a handful of Filipino defenders led by a young general will be erected soon in this historic town.
This project was given the big push after the provincial board of Ilocos Sur in a session presided by Board Member Jeremias Jerry Singson gave its go-signal authorizing Gov. Luis Chavit Singson to allocate P800,000 for the immediate construction of the said mural in Tirad Pass, this town.
The construction of the mural is a joint project of the provincial government of Ilocos Sur and a group from Bulacan.
The amount comprises 50% of the P1.6 milion needed for the construction of the mural which will showcase the famous battle in Tirad Pass where del Pilar and his handful of men gallantly fought a losing battle against the advancing American forces that were in hot pursuit of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo.
Del Pilar was ordered by Aguinaldo to defend his rear flank as he fled to Isabela to consolidate the rebel forces after the Filipino-American hostilities broke out.
Del Pilars forces were defeated and he, in turn, was killed in the ensuing battle of Tirad Pass mainly due to the treachery of a Filipino native who divulged to the Americans the secret passage where they were able to overrun the Filipino defenders.
In moving for the approval and authorization of Gov. Singson to allocate the said fund, SP Member Alexander Bistoyong cited the urgency of setting up the amount in the next supplemental budget to cope with the timetable of January in time for the commemoration of the 104th death anniversary of General del Pilar.
Bistoyong said the other 50% of the construction cost will be shouldered by a contractor from the Bulacan group.
