Magsingal gov’t intensifies organic farming

MAGSINGAL, Ilocos Sur – The municipal government has intensified organic farming here in the face of spiralling cost of commercial fertilizers in the market.

Magsingal Mayor Arlyn A. Favis said she has already convinced a big number of farmers here to use organic manure instead of the highly commercialized fertilizers to cushion the rising cost of rice production.

“As of this date, there are already around 20 farmer-incorporators who have started using organic fertilizers. Other farmers have also signified their intention to join the program,” Favis said.

Tomaneng, municipal agricultural officer, said around two truckloads of organic fertilizers had been distributed to the farmer-incorporators.

Favis revealed that the fund used to purchase the organic fertilizers came from the priority assistance development fund of Surigao del Norte Rep. Prospero Pichay, a native of this town.

“We are elated that our farmers have been supportive of our program,” Favis said.

Meanwhile, the lady mayor led her constituents and the different line agencies in a clean-up fun drive along the national highway starting from the town’s boundary in Sto. Domingo until the boundary in San Juan as part of the celebration of the National Crime Prevention Week.

The theme of this year’s celebration: Kilos Sambayanan, Krimen ay Hadlangan.
