Board member, military kiss and make up

SAN JUAN, Ilocos Sur – All’s well that ends well between the Federated president of the Philippine Councilors’ League, Ilocos Sur chapter and the military.

This was divulged by Col. Harold Cabreros, commanding officer of the 50th Infantry Batallion based in Guimod Norte here in a phone interview with a local station recently.

A letter purportedly coming from the Alfredo Buncayao Brigade, Ilocos Sur Command pointed to the death squad of the Arroyo administration and the military as the perpetrators of the political killings in the Ilocos.

The letter which was read by Jun Ramos during his Barangay Commando-Brigada program, mentioned the 103rd IB and 50th IB as allegedly behind the killings of several leaders of militant groups in the Ilocos including the attempt on the life of Pastor Billy Austin in Vigan City recently.

Cabreros disclosed that a dialogue was held between the military and Provincial Board Member Robert Tudayan through the initiative of Board Member Jose Bonuan, Jr. where they aired their sentiments to the satisfaction of both sides.

The other members of the provincial board and representatives of the Commission on Human Rights were present during the dialogue, Cabreros said.

“We have settled whatever differences we had; I have no personal grudge against him,” Cabreros said as he stressed this was the work of those who wanted to sow intrigues between the military and the human rights lawyer.

Last October, Tudayan and three other barangay officials received an envelope which contained a black ribbon.

Tudayan said the black ribbon was a death threat as he alleged it came from the military.

Tudayan said a military official has even mentioned him as the legal adviser of the New Peoples’ Army during a dialogue with barangay folks.

“When my clients seek my assistance, I do not inquire who they were; as a lawyer, I give them  my services,” Tudayan explained.

Last Oct. 13, Tablac Barangay Captain Laureano Galicia, one of those who received a death threat, disappeared and despite pleas from his family has not returned home.

Cabreros has repeatedly denied the allegation of Tudayan. He also said the military has no knowledge of the alleged abduction of Galicia.
