MDG caravan brings assistance to students and zanjeras of Pagudpud

PAGUDPUD, Ilocos Norte – The provincial government of Ilocos Norte together with the Millennium Development Goals Office gave school supplies, medical kits and financial assistance to indigent families of this town during the Millenium Development Goals Caravan 2012, at Luzong National High School on June 10, 2012.

Eight hundred twenty-seven (827) pupils and students from different schools in Pagudpud received books, blackboards, chart rack and other school supplies. Also, scholarship grantees from both elementary and secondary schools were given stipend amounting to P247,350.00. In addition, Governor Imee Marcos gave agricultural products such as fertilizer, vegetable seeds and backpack sprayers needed for the backyard garden maintenance of 30 Zanjeras.

“This is a big help from the governor, showing how she values education and her kailians. She’s not only helping the students, but their families as well,” says Mr. Villamor Calventas, principal of Pasaleng National High School.

Wilma Cariaga, mother of Joey Cariaga, a grade II pupil and one of the recipients, said she is thankful to the provincial government for easing her financial burden. “My husband who works as a security guard has minimal income which is insufficient for our family’s needs. And the stipend Joey received is of great help for his daily baon,” she added.

“This is just one of the series of caravans the provincial government has yet to bring to other neighboring towns in the province, so as to help our less fortunate kailians. It can be remembered that we have a Christmas caravan last December, in which 20 towns and 2 cities in the province received gift packs for Noche Buena,” Gov. Imee R. Marcos said.

Ending hunger and poverty is part of Gov. Imee R. Marcos’ MDG commitments upon assuming office by setting aside P77 million for various anti-poverty projects in order to halve poverty in the province by 2015.#
