CABUGAO, Ilocos Sur – Macrina Saturno, Barangay Nutrition Scholar of Barangay Bonifacio, this town will be awarded Region 1’s Out-standing BNS in a ceremony to be held in San Fernando City, La Union on September 29, 2012.
Likewise, in besting the other BNSs in Region 1 for the coveted award, Saturno will be one of the top eight finalists vying for the National Outstanding BNS award in the National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony scheduled on October 19, 2012 at Malacaniang.
Earlier, last August 22-23, 2012, the National Evaluation Team led by Assistant Secretary of Health and Executive Director Maria Bernardita T. Flores of the National Nutrition Council, accompanied by NNC-RO I Officer-in-Charge, Rose Lulu P. Pagaduan and NO II Ethelreina A. Balisnomo, PNAO Editha S. Castillo, and MNAO Joenah G. Sevilleja visited Saturno to evaluate and validate her records and achievements as a barangay nutrition scholar of Barangay Bonifacio, conducted a desk review, a written exam on the computation of age in months and determination of nutritional status including project visitations.
Aside from monitoring the weight of children, nutrition counseling and assisting in nutrition and health-related activities in the barangay, Saturno was recognized for initiating the establishment of a barangay nursery, a herbary, a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), vegetable garden at the barangay hall and waste ma-nagement – handicraft making using plastic bags. These endeavors were made possible with the strong support of the municipal government headed by Mayor Edgar S. Cobangbang, Jr. and the barangay officials especially the Barangay Nutrition Committee headed by Barangay Captain Valentin S. Tuyor, Jr.
The search for outstanding barangay nutrition scholar is designed to evaluate the performance of BNSs in order to enhance their efficiency and effectiveness in responding to the tasks and responsibilities as mandated to them. (With report from NO II Ethelreina A. Balisnomo, NNC Region I)
