Every year, each city and province select their outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) from among the 39,000 BNS deployed nationwide to vie for the title of Regional Outstanding BNS (ROBNS). From the 16 qualified ROBNSs, the top eight finalists are selected for the year’s Search for the National Outstanding BNS Award.
A BNS, by virtue of Presidential Decree 1569, is a barangay-based nutrition volunteer tasked to care for the malnourished of the barangay, mobilize the community to improve its nutrition situation and link services to the vulnerable groups of the community. The BNS is also a member of the Barangay Nutrition Committee and the Community Health Team.
The Search for the National Outstanding BNS led by the National Nutrition Council aims to assess the performance of the BNS and recognize those with exemplary performance in the delivery of basic nutrition and related services in his/her barangay. The eight finalists have been evaluated by the interagency National Evaluation Team, headed by Assistant Secretary of Health and NNC Executive Director Maria-Bernardita T. Flores from August to September.#
