According to the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST), banana is the most popular fruit among people of all origins because it is available all year-round and is cheaper compared to other fruits being sold in the market.
Not only that, banana ia a rich source of many nutrients that are beneficial to our health.
FNRI-DOST says that this yellow fruit is rich in potassium, which is needed for controlling the body’s fluid balance. muscle contraction, transmission of nerve impulses, and the proper functioning of the body’s heart and kidneys.
Moreover, banana is also a good source of fiber, vitamin C, and minerals such as sodium, calcium, and magnesium, FNRI-DOST says.
On the other hand, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that one serving of banana gives a person about 8% of daily fiber dosage which is good for digestive health. Banana is known as a natural remedy for a number of illnesses like diarrhea and constipation.
CDC also says eating half a cup of banana gives 10% of the vitamin C that a person needs everyday.
Banana also contains antioxidant properties that protect the cells from free radicals. It is a source of minerals such as sodium, calcium, and magnesium, which help potassium regulate water balance and blood pressure in cells.
FNRI-DOST says that ripe bananas can be served as dessert, as a delicious additon to fruit salads and in ice cream concoctions. It is an excellent ingredient in breads, cookies, muffins and cakes.
Unripe or green bananas can also be fried, boiled, baked or made into chips.
