SAN FERNANDO–Vigan City Mayor Juan Carlo S. Medina is the new chairman of the Regional Development Council in Ilocos.
Last March 8, President Rodrigo R. Duterte appointed Medina, six years after former Ilocos Sur Governor Deogracias “DV” B. Savellano served as the last council head from 2008 to 2010.
“I am humbled to be chosen as the RDC Chairperson, a position I never expected at all but with your help, our joint commitments and determination, we can bring Region 1 to greater heights,” said Medina.
“I may not be the most qualified for the position but I promise to be the most hardworking,” Medina added.
Medina officially started his duties in the Council when he presided over the First Quarter Full Council Meeting and administered the oath of office of the elected officials of the various sectors and support committees on March 28.
The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) in Ilocos Region, the secretariat and in charge of the over-all affairs of the Council, already gave Medina an orientation of the RDC, its structure, functions, major outputs, and other vital information related to his new appointment.
John Gagucas, senior economic and development specialist of the NEDA-1, said the selection of Medina as the head of the RDC is significant as he will provide direction of all activities of the council.
“Essentially, he will supervise the monitoring of the implementation of major inter-provincial and regional development programs, projects, and activities, and direct the formulation of a comprehensive regional development plan and investment programming priorities for the region,” Gagucas said.
He will likewise represent the region in Cabinet meetings and other activities at the national level and perform other functions and duties as may be directed by the President.
As the Chairperson, Medina will serve for a term of three years which coincides with his regular term as local elective official.#
