QUIRINO, Ilocos Sur – Local officials of Patiacan and Patongcaleo villages on Friday signed a resolution here condemning violent activities and entry of New People’s Army (NPA) in their areas.
Lt. Col. Eugenio Julio Osias IV INF (GSC) PA, battalion commander of 81st Infantry Battalion, said the local officials of these barangays prompted the creation of the resolution after NPA rebels committed atrocities recently.
On October 9, an improvised explosive device (IED) was thrown and exploded on the roof of barangay hall of Brgy. Patongcaleo. Another IED was found on the second floor while soldiers were conducting security on an ongoing skills and livelihood training being conducted by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
In Barangay Patiacan, troops of the 81st Infantry (SPARTAN) Battalion were fired upon by two NPA rebels while conducting “bayanihan” activities together with teachers and students of Patiacan Elementary School on October 15 that resulted to the death of one soldier and injuring a soldier and a civilian.
The NPA rebels that committed the said atrocities were believed to be members of the Kilusang Larangang Gerilya (KLG) Montes that operates in the tri-boundaries of Abra, Mountain Province, and Ilocos Sur.
Osias is grateful to the local officials for hearing the Army’s plead for support, cooperation and trust in fighting against the NPA rebels and in recognizing the military efforts in bringing them the peace and security.
“Together, we will fight against these NPA rebels to attain the peace and development we longed for. The Army will support you as you take a big leap forward towards living in a better place,” he said.#
