PSHS Director calls on Grade 5 pupils to prepare for ‘Pisay’ entry

SAN ILDEFONSO, Ilocos Sur – “We are inviting the brightest and the wisest to join us in the Philippine Science High School System, particularly incoming Grade 6 pupils to prepare themselves next school year and undertake our qualifying exams by October 2018.”

This was the call of PSHS-Ilocos Region Director Ronnalee Orteza during a Kapihan media forum held at her office this weekend, saying the country needs more scientists, mathematicians and researchers who will eventually lead the country in the future.

We are way behind to producing these kinds of people when compared with other countries, and at PSHS, they will be scholars who will receive stipends ranging from P500 to P4000, including uniform and transportation allowances depending on their status in life but they have to maintain an average grade of 2.25 with no grade of 5,” she said.

She also said that the PSHS curriculum is more advanced when compared with the DepEd’s Special Math and Science classes considering the more advance laboratories and their exposure to national and international competitions and constant visiting scientist mentors.

Our classrooms are already equipped with electronic boards; there is one is to one ratio of computers, laptops and tablets. Moreover, our Advance Science and Technology Building, new library and a new auditorium will soon rise by the end of 2018, with a total budget of P160 million. Our Advance Technology Building will have 16 new laboratories and a planetarium,” she said.

She said that examinees this coming October who are Grade VI applicants must prepare to take the test in 4 areas: Quantitative (Math), Verbal (English), Abstract and Scientific Ability. Last year, some 160 Grade VI students from all over the country took the exams and 90 were taken in.

We are also inviting incoming Grade 8 and 9 students to take up the lateral examination this coming May 2 in case there are those who are kicked out or there will be those who will back out. Application forms can be downloaded at www.irc.pshs.edu.ph,” she said.

Asked why PSHS contestants were nowhere in the last DepEd Day Bicentennial Kannawidan streetdancing, poetry and quiz bee competitions, she said that PSHS “was not invited.”

We could have joined when invited. Hopefully by next year, we will be invited so we can join, in fact, we always join DepEd competitions when invited,” she said.

This School Year, 79 students will graduate to take up Science and Technology courses in college with less than 10 coming from Ilocos Sur. Eleven students backed out or were kicked out.

For new and lateral examinees, more info can be provided by Registrar Jahmai O. Grande at 0907 857 1403 or Student Services Division Chief Mary Ann R. Lagua at 0998 534 0057.
