Candidates in narco list not disqualified–Vigan Comelec

VIGAN CITY – Atty. Leonila Fortuna of the Vigan City Commission on Elections (Comelec) said that it’s not a fair move by the government that the PDEA has made public the names of those in its “narco list” because these people are not yet convicted.

This was her reaction to a media query during a Dap-ayan press conference at the provincial capitol, May 3.

“Being mere suspects won’t disqualify them in running this May 14 barangay and SK elections and they are free to serve once they are elected. It’s only when they are convicted in court that they will be disqualified,” she said.

She announced that in the PDEA’s narco list, nobody is from Vigan City.

She also said that the Vigan City Comelec is busy training teachers who will serve in the elections.

“However, the method of counting votes will be mano-mano (manual) style and we will be using the ballots reproduced for the aborted October 2017 barangay and SK elections so the government can save,” she said.

She also said that as of press time, no election-related violence has been recorded in the city. (Edward B. Antonio)
