NNC1 recognizes nutrition champs in Ilocos Region

VIGAN CITY – The National Nutrition Council-Regional Office I together with the Regional Nutrition Committee recognized the nutrition champions in Ilocos Region in the just concluded Gawad Parangal ng Nutrisyon held last August 30, 2018 in Vigan Convention Center. This annual and momentous event was attended by more than 250 guests and delegates from the Regional Line Agencies, awardees, LGUs, School Divisions and other partners.

Vigan City and Santa, Ilocos Sur bagged the 2017 Regional Green Banner award, City and Municipal Category, respectively for three (3) consecutive years bringing home the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) awards. Balaoan, La Union and Bangui, Ilocos Norte also bagged the Municipal Green Banner Award as municipal outstanding implementers in their respective provinces.

Ms. Aurelia Aguilar, Barangay Nutrition Scholar of Oaqui 3, Luna, La Union was adjudged as the 2017 Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar while Ms. Merlie Guanzo and Ms. Irene Casiño of Vigan and Candon City brought home the first and second runner-up, respectively. Other finalists are Ms. Claudia Batucal of Laoag City, Ms. Analyn Bernardo of Ilocos Sur province, Mr. Randy Degala of Ilocos Norte province, Ms. Remedios Estrada of Pangasinan province, Ms. Romavir Brioso of San Fernando City, Ms. Lilibeth Manalo of Alaminos City, Ms. Florie Ann Teppang of Batac City and Ms. Marife Santos of San Carlos City.

San Juan National High School of Ilocos Sur Division Office was bestowed as champion for the Nutri-Jingle Video Contest as part of the 2018 Regional Nutrition Month Celebration while Alaminos City National High School and Mangaldan National High School bagged the first and second runner-up, respectively.

Dr. Azucena Dayanghirang, Deputy Executive Director of NNC graced the said activity as the keynote speaker. She congratulated all the winners and challenged them including the non- awardees to strive more as malnutrition problems are still public health concerns not only in the region but for the whole nation.

“As you go home today with the pride of your awards, I would like to ask you to remember three things. Since we are approaching the BER months, I ask you to remember three words – Brave, Encourage and Relay.”

“Brave all the challenges that you are and may continue to face that may be obstacles in achieving your nutrition goals. Encourage good changes in nutrition practices of the members of the community such as exclusive breastfeeding, giving of proper complementary food, consuming a healthy diet and engaging in physical activity. Relay to the members of the community proper nutrition and available services that they may avail of. Relay also to the members of your nutrition committees, colleagues and even neighboring LGUs your good practices that they may be inspired to adapt these,” she said.

Mayor Juan Carlo Medina of Vigan City, Mayor Jesus Bueno Jr. of Santa, Ilocos Sur and Ms. Aurelia Aguilar, BNS of Oaqui 3, Luna, La Union also shared their journey in attaining their respective recognitions and committed their usual support and leadership to strive more in their fight against all forms of malnutrition.

Members of the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team headed by its chairperson, Ms. Rosemarie Villanueva of the Department of Agriculture were also recognized. KPAG
