DAMAGE TO RICE FARMS IN ILOCOS SUR ESTIMATED AT OVER P1.2 BILLION. Hectares of rice farms like this one in Ilocos Sur were damaged by the strong winds and rains of Typhoon Ompong when it passed across Northern Luzon last Sep 15, 2018. The typhoon wreaked damage at the worst possible time just when the rice fields were forming their grains, although according to some reports, a few lucky farmers were able to reap their fields right before the typhoon struck. The Ilocos Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council pegged the cost of damage to rice farms in Ilocos Sur at more than P1.2 billion. (photo by Eden A. Alviar)
