NARVACAN, Ilocos Sur – Three men were charged at the regional trial court here for transporting without pertinent permits chemicals considered as major substances in making shabu.

Charged under case number 2935-N here were Marcelino Funtanilla, 41, married, farmer, resident of San Nicolas, Tarlac City; Joseph Elias Copidez, 35, and Jomar Martin, 30.

The accused on board an Izuzu Elf truck were intercepted by agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the PNP here in the morning of Oct. 4 at a checkpoint in Barangay Quinarayan, this town, transporting 180 plastic bottles and 24 gallons of muriatic acid and several gallons of distilled water.

The truck was reportedly bound for Abra when intercepted by the PDEA agents and police.

Funtanilla could not produce pertinent permits for transporting the chemicals.

PDEA agents said muriatic acid can be mixed with acetone or ephedrine in the manufacture of shabu, an illegal drug.
