CANDON CITY, June 19 (PIA) — More than 300 jobseekers were hired on-the-spot during the mega jobs fair here last week.
Fresnaida Gundan, chief of the Department of Labor-Ilocos Sur Field Office, said newly-hired employees were given slots in several job fields ranging from construction, office and medical posts.
The job fair attracted at least 2,000 applicants who vied for 4,200 overseas and 2,000 local job slots.
Gundan said DOLE partnered with the Candon City government, Office of Rep. Eric Singson Jr., 2nd district of Ilocos Sur and ABS CBN.
Ilocos Region Labor Director Grace Ursua earlier told applicants to be patient in going from one table to another to present their credentials to employers.
She said that applicants at the job fair were better off than those applicants going from one office to another who spend for transportation and food.
Incoming Representative Eric Singson, father of outgoing Rep. Eric, Jr., promised to provide training so applicants are easier to be employed.
He said his son has allotted P20 million from his Congressional funds to be loaned out to applicants going abroad without collateral. The fund was channeled to the Ilocos Sur Cooperative Bank to handle the loan agreement.
Loan applicants would only have to present their work contract and working visa as guarantee.
Singson partnered with Victor Fernandez, President of Philippine Association Service Exporter, Inc. (PASEI), who said that applicants from Ilocos Sur will be their priority.
Fernandez reminded that no Filipino worker can work abroad without the overseas employment certificate.
Government agencies which provided supported during the jobs fair were the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), Department of Social Services and Development (DSWD), Technical Skills and Development Authority (TESDA), Public Employment Service Office (POEA), Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), Civil Service Commission (CSC), Commission on Audit (COA) and the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC)-Baguio.
Carrying the theme “Kalayaan: Ambagan Tungo sa Malawakang Kaunlaran,” the 2013 jobs fair in the Ilocos region was simultaneously held in San Fernando, La Union and in Laoag Cty. #
