Baguio not on lockdown despite nCoV scare

BAGUIO CITY β€” The Office of Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong via its public information office (PIO) stressed Wednesday morning that there is no lockdown for tourists and visitors in Baguio amid the 2019 novel coronavirus scare.

Aileen Paguio Refuerzo, Baguio City public information officer said the City Government stands by the earlier proclamation that the only canceled activity is the opening parade of the 25th Baguio Flower Festival which should have taken place last February 1, 2020.

There is no decision yet for the Grand Street Dancing and Float Parade that is scheduled for February 29 to March 1, 2020.

Other postponed activities include the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (CARAA) sports meet.

The clarification came after a government TV network reported about a statement from the Secretary of National Defense (SND) that caused alarm with the public, prompting queries about the real situation in Baguio City.

β€œThe DND supports the decision of the Philippine Military Academy to temporarily close its grounds to visitors and outsiders in light of the 2019-nCoV situation. This is in step with the decision of the City Mayor, Honorable Mayor Benjamin Magalong, who imposed a mandatory city-wide lockdown for tourists and visitors,” defense chief Delfin Lorenzana said in a statement.

Lorenzana added that unless Magalong reverses the decision before February 14, 2020, he is suggesting that the PMA Alumni Homecoming be moved to a more auspicious date in the future. The said homecoming is scheduled on February 14.

Paguio assured the public there was never an announcement of lockdown coming from Mayor Magalong.

Meanwhile, the Baguio City Health Services Office (CHSO) has confirmed that there is a person under investigation (PUI) in Baguio City. According to the health department, the PUI is a 23-year old female who has a travel history to Hong Kong and has symptoms of coughing and slight flu. She was immediately confined in an isolation room of a medical facility here where she is reportedly showing improvements.
