BATANES IDYLL. Monique Espejo Torina, granddaughter of Tawid News founder Salvador Espejo, reads a book she found at the “Little Free Library,” a book-swapping station built by the side of a traditional Ivatan house in Basco, Batanes. Comprising three main islands and seven islets, Batanes is the northernmost province of the Philippines under the Cagayan Valley Region and is famous for its picturesque terrain, the storm-proof stone houses and the curious mix of Taiwanese and Spanish influence in the local people and culture. The entire province is listed in the UNESCO tentative list for inscription in the World Heritage List. (photo by Dr. Daisy Joy Espejo Torina)
