“BATERIA” WATCHTOWER. This 16th-century watchtower built by the Spaniards still stands guard along the coastline just off the national highway in San Esteban, Ilocos Sur. The place is named “Bateria” or “battery” referring to the row of cannons positioned on top of the tower as defense against invading enemies. The tower has been restored in 2016 by the National Historical Commission and the local government of San Esteban and has become a tourist destination. (photo by Jasper A. Espejo)
