SAN FERNANDO CITY – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in the Ilocos region has offered scholarship grants to any high school graduate or incoming college students.
The bureau said ten slots are available exclusively to children of small-scale fisher folk who are interested to pursue a degree in Fisheries or any related four-year course starting on the first semester of school year 2014-2015.
Nestor D. Domenden, BFAR regional director, said the Fisheries Scholarship Program through the Fisherfolk Children Educational Grant (FCEG) is a program that helps produce graduates who can easily land a job.
“The program aims to help children from marginalized fisher folk families to earn a degree that is in demand,” said Domenden.
Qualified applicants are those who can meet the criteria set by the bureau. For a high school graduate, he/she must not be presently enrolled or have not yet taken any units in any course and the general weighted average is not lower than 80 percent or its equivalent.
“Also, applicants must not be more than 20 years old,” Domenden said.
Parents of the applicant must be a member of any fishing association or cooperative in their area.
Further, the family’s gross income must not be more than P25,000 per year and that they must be residents in their municipality for at least four years prior to the application for the scholarship.
Documentary requirements must also be submitted along with the application form namely a copy of diploma, transcript of records, birth certificate, income tax return of parents, certification of residency and good moral character and parents’ certificate of membership to a fishing association or cooperative.
FCEG scholars are entitled to free matriculation and other school fees, monthly stipend of P2,500, P2,000 semestral book allowance, research/thesis/special problem support of P3,000 and a graduation support of P500.
The deadline of submission of the required documents and application forms is on February 21 while the qualifying exam is set on March 22.
