VIGAN CITY, March 25 (PIA) – – At least 10 residents here received their small businesses on wheels under the Department of Labor and Employment’s Negosyo sa Kariton (Negokart) program.

The livelihood assistance, in partnership with the Vigan city government, amounted to P140,000 or each recipient getting P14,000 worth of business cart.

Social welfare and development officer Cely Agcamaran said that each recipient was given a vending cart (tribike), raw materials, and training on production, entrepreneurship and business management.

Agcamaran said that the beneficiaries peddle a variety of street food from fishballs, vegetables, balut, peanuts, and native delicacies.

She said that the beneficiaries will also be assisted in forming their association for mutual aid such as collective savings mobilization for social protection coverage under the Social Security System or PhilHealth.

The Negokart program is part of DOLE’s thrust of providing productive and gainful employment opportunities to marginalized workers and workers in the informal sector through livelihood projects.

Grace Ursua, DOLE director in the Ilocos, said more residents have a chance at a more decent and viable source of income through the Negokart project.

“With the package of assistance given to them, the ambulant vendors can make their existing livelihood grow into more profitable business that will yield profits that are at par with minimum wage earners,” Ursua said.#
