Christmas in Baguio to start early, end late

BAGUIO CITY — Baguio City will start its Christmas season celebrations early and will end late too.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong issued Executive Order (EO) 131 declaring November 2019 to January 2020 as “Christmas in Baguio 2019.”

Dubbed “An Enchanting Baguio Christmas,” festivities like the Christmas Fair, Lights and Sounds Show, Christmas Tree, sports activities, community-centered events, and arts programs are scheduled to start in various venues around the city. The events will be done in partnership with city offices, government line agencies, and the private and business sectors.

The Baguio Christmas Fair is a simulation of world famous Christmas fairs in European countries through creatively curated chalets assigned to partners and sponsors at the Rose Garden in Burnham Park. Performances, Santa Claus meet-and-greet, a selfie-station featuring a horse-drawn sleigh and other festive crowd-drawers are expected to lure holidaymakers.

A lights and sounds show featuring timeless Christmas tales, interspersed with Yuletide stories on film will also be presented at the Rose Garden and Burnham Lake.

Atop Session road, the 2019 Christmas tree will be lighted by city officials and private sector representatives at 6 pm on December 1 to signal the formal opening of “An Enchanting Baguio Christmas.” Street and Park lights, in sync with business establishments and even private homes will light up simultaneously to spark the festive mood.

Sports activities such as the Saka Rocker Music and Football Festival, an organized Barangay Peace Cup will be part of the celebration, with an exhibit of city athletes’ photographs, documentaries and memorabilia.

In the spirit of sharing, benevolent volunteers will “share a meal and stories” with indigent and senior citizens who will otherwise spend Christmas alone, children will share Christmas joy with other less-fortunate children, and soup kitchens will be set up during Simbang Gabi.

Artists will also showcase their creativity in various media with works to be exhibited in several areas in the city. ●
