City, barangay nutrition committees’s role in addressing malnutrition emphasized in meeting

ALAMINOS CITY – The City nutrition officials and barangay captains held a committee meeting at the Suki Hall, this city on March 25, 2014 with the purpose of reactivating the nutrition committee as well as the barangay nutrition committees in the area and resolve the issue of the deployment of barangay nutrition scholars in every barangay.

National Nutrition Council Officer III Rose Lulu P. Pagaduan presented the city’s nutrition picture while Nutrition Program Coordinator Eileen B. Blanco discussed the overview of the local nutrition committee and its vital roles in addressing hunger and malnutrition in the locality with emphasis on the preparation of a nutrition action plan complementary to and integrated with other plans of the local government unit and higher level plans; adoption and financing of the plan; coordination of nutrition and nutrition-related activities of member agencies and other agencies; monitor of nutrition and related activities of member agencies and other agencies involved in the nutrition program; and mobilization of resources to ensure that the plan is implemented.

Sangguniang Panlungsod Member Jan Marionne R. Fontelera, committee on health and sanitation chairman, said that sectoral actions can have a better impact when coordinated and integrated through a mechanism that will bring these sectors together for shared decision-making and responsibility on matters related to nutrition improvement.

The issue on the deployment of at least one BNS in every barangay was finally resolved with the commitment of the barangay captains as chairman of the barangay nutrition committees to designate a BNS and support the implementation of the nutrition programs in their respective barangays.
