City officials eye Vigan spot in the top 14 New7Wonders Cities of the World

VIGAN CITY – This Heritage City and tourist destination in the North made it to the top 21 of the New7Wonders Cities of the World but the campaign continues for Vigan City to clinch a spot in the final phase of the search for the New7Wonders Cities, city officials here said.

Last July 7, the Swiss group New7Wonders, announced that Vigan is among the 21 finalists which include Bangkok, Thailand; Barcelona, Spain; Beirut, Lebanon; Chicago, USA; Doha, Qatar; Durban, South Africa; Havana, Cuba; Istanbul, Turkey; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; La Paz, Bolivia; London, United Kingdom; Mendoza, Argentina; Mexico City, Mexico; Mumbai, India; Perth, Australia; Quito, Ecuador; Reykjavik, Iceland; Saint Petersburg, Russia; Seoul, South Korea; and Shenzhen, China.
Vigan bested other big cities in the running for the New7 Wonders Cities of the World such as Athens in Greece, Casablanca in Morocco, Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, Prague in Czech Republic, Vancouver in Canada, and Kyoto in Japan.

The list of 21 contenders will be reduced to 14 in October and and the final top 7 will be announced in December 7.
New7Wonders Foundation headed by Founder and President Bernard Weber, the Swiss group behind the campaign, said the diversity of the cities in contention for the “canon of seven” is “remarkable in terms of regional geography and urban culture.”

In an earlier statement, Weber said he hopes the campaign will be a “catalyst for discussing everything from urban planning to metropolitan governance, from tourism to architecture.”

The city officials led by Mayor Eva Marie S. Medina, enlisted the Metro Manila Development Authority to support Vigan’s bid by allowing promotional materials to be posted in billboards along major road networks in Metro Manila.

The Department of Transportation and Communication has already approved the placement of campaign materials in all airports and seaports nationwide.

The promotional materials will be posted in sites approved by the MMDA and DOTC for three months until October as the campaign enters its penultimate stage.

Earlier, Vigan’s campaign bid got a big boost with the overwhelming show of support coming from national agencies, government officials, private individuals, celebrities and the PNP.

Mayor Medina earlier said that the Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines has enjoined all Catholics in the country to vote for Vigan and pray for its success in its campaign to be one of the New7Wonders Cities of the World.

The Philippine Tourism Board, Department of Tourism, Philippine Tourism Operators Association and other agencies that include the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority led by Mark Lapid had pledged their support for Vigan, Medina said.

The PNP top honcho, Director General Allan Purisima has sent a memorandum to all regional, city and provincial police offices to support Vigan in its campaign for a spot in the New7Wonders Cities.

The Office of the President has already endorsed its support to Vigan through the National Historical Commission, DILG, DoT, National Commission on Culture and Arts (NCAA), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), DepEd, and other agencies.

The League of Cities led by Mayor Herbert Bautista has sent an advisory to all members to support the campaign of Vigan and the putting up of promotional materials in the major thoroughfares of Quezon City.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has enjoined all the Philippine embassies in foreign countries to help in the promotion of the bid of Vigan.#
