LAOAG CITY — In celebration of the 202nd founding anniversary of Ilocos Norte, the Provincial Government will once again show its best practices through the annual “Open Capitol” on February 3 at the Provincial Capitol Building, Laoag City.
Alongside the promotion of transparency by allowing thousands of Ilokanos to visit offices, this year’s “Open Capitol” will showcase Ilokano creativity from age-old crafts, digital arts, architecture, and food, among others, through exhibitions, demonstrations, and talks.
“Everything is anchored on Ilokano creativity. We are calling this year’s ‘Open Capitol’ as ‘Ilokano Creatives Fest’, featuring Ilokano creativity by our weavers, our heritage artisans including our media artists. At the same time, we are showcasing the best practices of the Provincial Capitol,” Provincial Tourism Officer Ianree Raquel said.
“It will be a lively and interactive activity because there will be exhibitions of graphic artists, filmmakers, and tattoo artists who will demonstrate. Indeed, it’s a mixture of those we usually see at the capitol as well as those who work here and outside the province proudly showcasing Ilokano creativity,” Mr. Raquel added.
As a kick-start to the province’s celebration on February 2, a job fair will be conducted at the Provincial Capitol Auditorium from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., followed by the unveiling of the “IN2020” installation, which will feature solar-generated power and natural and found materials at the Provincial Capitol Grounds, 6:00 p.m.
The “Creative Showcase” activity on February 3 will involve Ilokano artists who will speak on various topics such as visual arts, events industry, social media influence, painting, graphic design, film, and tattoo. Among the invited speakers are Grae Sales, James Michael Romaguera, Pamela Aragoza, Katrina Valera, June Pugat, Dindo Llana, Miguel Kairuz, Angelie Banaag, John Mark Pasion, Ariel Pacheco, Marlito Astocia,Kim Santos, Janer Santos, along with Ilokano vlogger Michelle Dy.
Other Ilokano professionals like Architects Felino Palafox Jr., Rex Hofilena, Miguel Guerrero, William Ti, and Engr. Pedro Agcaoili will talk about masterplanning in Ilocos Norte, while Prof. Norma Respicio will speak on the inabel industry.
Local Government Units will also be participating in the celebration by setting up their booths for the trade exhibition which includes demonstrations and performances.
