BANTAY, Ilocos Sur – The Department of Agriculture (DA) in Ilocos, in partnership with the Philippine Agricultural Journalists, Inc. (PAJ), will hold a seminar-workshop on climate change on September 21-23 at the Metro Vigan Fiesta Garden Hotel here.
The workshop entitled “Mobilizing Science for Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security: Engaging the Ilocos Media” aims to equip journalists, government communicators, and information officers in the region with a deeper understanding and appreciation of what climate change is, its processes, and scientific terminologies.
DA-1 Regional Executive Director Lucrecio Alviar Jr. said, “In the context of agriculture and food security, science innovations on mitigating and adapting to climate change are available, but these are not well-communicated to farmers and the public due to inadequate coverage by the mainstream media.”
Alviar said the DA has organized the activity to enable Ilocano journalists with science-based knowledge on climate change, agriculture food security, and human safety, so they could communicate these topics better to the public.
He added that the seminar-workshop is expected to enhance the environmental reporting skills of regional journalists and sustain media coverage of contemporary climate change issues that will influence policy makers and key stakeholders.
“This initiative will also lead to a well-informed and vigilant citizenry through a deeper and more accurate understanding of climate change issues and the eventual mobilization of key stakeholders and farming communities on climate change adaptation and mitigation,” he said.
The seminar-workshop will be attended by mainstream and campus journalists and media professionals from the provinces of La Union, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur.
Media practitioners from the province of Pangasinan will join the Cordillera batch in a separate schedule.#
