Drug pusher killed in Candon City

CAMP BGEN OSCAR M FLORENDO – A buy-bust operation resulted in the death of an alleged drug pusher during police operation conducted on August 5, 2018, 9:20 AM in Candon City, Ilocos Sur, according to a news release from the PNP Regional Office 1.

Police Chief Superintendent Romulo E Sapitula identified the victim as Leonardo Portela of Sta Lucia, Ilocos Sur.

According to PCSupt Sapitula, joint elements of Ilocos Sur Police Provincial Office, Regional Drug Enforcement Unit (RDEU) and Regional Intelligence Division (RID), Police Regional Office 1 conducted an illegal drug buy-bust operation against Portela.

During the transaction, Portela sensed that the poseur-buyer was a policeman prompting him to draw his firearm and to shoot the poseur-buyer twice. The policeman, however, was wearing a bullet proof vest and came out unharmed.

As a result of Portela’s aggression, members of the backup team retaliated and shot Portela several times. Portela was brought to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

A homemade cal. 38 revolver with three ammunition and two pieces spent shells was recovered near the body of Portela. Php 500 buy-bust money and three pieces of transparent plastic sachets containing dried marijuana leaves were also found in his pocket. (TNM/PNP PRO1)
