SAN FERNANDO CITY, LA UNION – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) regional office here is currently releasing stipend to indigent senior citizens for the first quarter of 2012 under the Social Pension Program.

A total of 2,318 senior citizens in La Union ages 77 years old and above will receive a P500 monthly stipend. This will be released on a quarterly basis for a total amount of P1,500 per beneficiary, Information Officer Iryn delos Reyes said.

Delos Reyes also explained that the Social Pension is the realization of Republic Act 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 which institutionalizes social pro-tection to the elderly by providing monthly stipend to the indigent senior citizens and support families to provide care and protection to sick and disabled elderlies.

Others to be covered are senior citizens who have no pension and no family support and living below poverty line, the sickly, and disabled who are in the masterlist of the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction (NHTS-PR).

Under Republic Act 1994, the monthly stipend of P500 will augment the subsistence and other medical needs of indigent senior citizens in line with the government’s obligation to protect the most vulnerable sector through social protection.#
