ENDANGERED HERITAGE. Vigan City’s standing as a World Heritage Site is in peril according to architect-conservationist and Sangguniang Panglunsod Member Rey Florentino if the Spanish colonial buildings within the city were destroyed by calamity like fire, earthquake or typhoon. In the wake of Typhoon Ompong last September, several old buildings along Calle Crisologo and neighboring streets sustained damages like the one pictured above with its roof blown away by strong winds. SPM Florentino is recommending a city resolution declaring private Spanish houses as important cultural treasures so that the city government can provide aid for their restoration and conservation.
