Feature: Getting the most out of your SSS membership

Wealth, just like a person’s life, is ephemeral.

Any moment, a person’s hard-earned money and source of income can be snatched away by sickness, disability, old age, death and other contingencies.

When this happens, the Social Security System (SSS) serves as the wall people can lean on until they can fully stand again on their own.

Well aware of its vital role, SSS on its 60th year seeks to further strengthen its position as a viable social security institution and wants to present a fresh presentation to its benefactors how SSS’ benefits can be a great deal of help with their needs.

With this, SSS made a joint advocacy campaign with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) to create a wider scope of understanding and awareness on the various benefits of investing in the state-run social insurance programs.

“Since February, PIA has been implementing a nationwide promotional campaign advocating the programs, services and benefits of the SSS that everyone should really know,” said Regional Director Jennilyne Role of PIA-Region I.

As the communication arm of the government, PIA takes the lead in promoting SSS programs and services through massive information dissemination campaign to be able to reach out to existing SSS clients and potential members, particularly at the local level.

For the past months, PIA staged several activities in the regions to help SSS in promoting its mandate to provide meaningful protection to members and their families against the hazards of disability, sickness, maternity, old age, death and other contingencies resulting in loss of income or financial burden.

“Part of the campaign include the airing of radio programs and television plugs, production and distribution of advocacy materials, conduct of series of multi-sectoral and barangay fora and information caravans all over the regions,” Role said.

This is an opportunity to provide deeper understanding and appreciation on the programs and projects of SSS as many SSS members are not so much aware of the benefits they can get from SSS, she added.

In the province of Pangasinan, PIA and SSS-Dagupan City branch conducted a briefing about the latter’s programs and benefits among media personalities and various national government agencies during the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas-Pangasinan chapter’s “Oplan BroadcasTreeing” held in Balungao town on August 25.

Jobseekers were also briefed about SSS during the jobs fair of the Provincial Employment Services Office (PESO) held on August 29 in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

Aside from the briefing, staff of SSS-Alaminos City branch conducted an on-site registration, answered queries and provided information about their agency, and distributed information-education-communication (IEC) campaign materials.

Activities held during the jobs fair were replicated by PIA and SSS-Dagupan City branch in a barangay forum held at the San Jose Elementary School in Barangay San Jose, San Jacinto, Pangasinan on September 29.

With these efforts, PIA is helping SSS deliver to the public their programs, projects, accomplishments and advisories not only to provide information but also to increase the present number of SSS members in the country.

Knowing the importance of SSS contribution as an investment and opportunity to save for contingencies in life such as sickness, disability, or old age, ensures that existing and future SSS members could get the most out of their SSS membership so they could exclaim that indeed, “Sulit sa SSS.” (April Montes-Bravo/PIA-1)
