A housing cooperative managed by a Filipino couple is one of the recipients in this year’s Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Global Bayaning Pilipino Awards.
Kapitbahayan Cooperative Limited (KCL), a top tenant-managed housing coop in Sydney managed by Filipino couple Ruben and Cen Amores, together with several other organizations from the United States, Canada, Asia-Pacific (covering Singapore and Hong Kong), Europe (covering Italy and U.K.), Middle East, and Japan have been chosen to receive the Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Global Bayaning Pilipino Awards in recognition of their extraordinary services to their fellow Filipinos in the said countries.
Amores, founder of Kapitbayan Cooperative Limited, and his wife Cen will receive the award in a ceremony to be held at the ABS-CBN main studios on July 19.
Amores, a native of Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, founded KCL in 1995 when he and his wife were new arrivals in Australia. Now the top tenant-managed housing coop in Sydney, it is the only one expanding by utilizing its surplus funds and investment interest.
The cooperative has been a recipient of a number of awards for its role in community housing.
KCL was awarded for “Excellence in Assets Management” by the Association of Resource Co-op Housing in 2002; and “Award for Excellence (Innovation in Service Delivery)” by the NSW Awards for Excellence in Community Housing Steering Committee in 2004.
The Bayaning Pilipino Awards was named after Don Eugenio “Geny” Lopez Jr., founder of ABS-CBN Corporation, the largest entertainment and broadcasting company in the Philippines, and known as the “Father of Philippine Broadcasting”.
Launched in 1995, Bayaning Pilipino Awards has gone global this year in search around the world for Filipino organizations, who in the face of challenges and difficulties manage to rise and emerge as role models of service in their communities.#
