GUMIL to hold seminar on Ilocano orthography, journalism

VIGAN CITY — The Gunglo dagiti Mannurat nga Ilokano iti Filipinas ken Ballasiw-Taaw (GUMIL) Ilocos Sur and GUMIL Filipinas, an international organization of Ilocano writers, will conduct an Ilocano Orthography and Journalism Seminar on February 21 at the Tadena Hall, Administration Building of the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) in this city.

The seminar, dubbed as “Innadal 2020,” will be conducted in coordination with the provincial government of Ilocos Sur, Capitol Press Club, Ilocos Sur Integrated Press and the Ilocano Studies
Center of UNP. 

Benjamin Pacris, president of GUMIL Ilocos Sur, said the seminar aims to guide public information officers, writers, journalists, including graduating mass communication students of UNP and multilingual education teachers, on the art of writing Ilocano words with the proper letters and grammar according to standard usage and Ilocano journalism and translation techniques.

“About 120 members of GUMIL Ilocos Sur, Capitol Press Corps, Ilocos Sur Integrated Press, Association of Government Information Officers, GUMIL-UNP Chapter, including staff of Board Members, are expected to attend this Ilocano 101,” Pacris said.

He said the resource speakers are composed of veteran and award-winning Ilocano writers which include Cles Rambaud, editor of Bannawag Magazine; Dr. Joel Manuel, fictionist and poet who studied Language Education at the University of the Philippines-Diliman; Eliseo Contillo, former Bannawag News Editor; and Neyo Valdez, freelance writer/editor.

“This one-day free seminar will enable the participants to learn more about Ilocano orthography and Ilocano journalism and translation which will guide them in their chosen careers,” he added. ●
