LAOAG CITY – Through the Ilocos Norte Youth Development Office (INYDO), young Ilocanos will have major involvement in the province’s bicentennial celebration with literary competitions, the annual Sirib Awards, and “Taray ni Ayat” (“run of love”).

While Ilocos Norte’s 200th year is to be officially launched with the 7th “Tan-ok ni Ilocano Festival of Festivals,” the festival showdown will be preceded by a series of activities, including contests for students and other youth on January 27.

INYDO Executive Weenter Ventura shared that together with the Ilocos Norte Tourism Office (INTO) and Provincial Education Department (PED), “we are preparing for a quiz show, a singing contest, vlog (video blog)-making contest, debates, and a digital poster-making contest. “

Guidelines have been posted at the “Tan-ok ni Ilocano Festival of Festivals” Facebook page.

Meanwhile, the Sirib Awards will be held on February 16. It is a recognition program for Ilocano youth aged six to 30 who have gained awards or titles in the national or international level, whether in academics, sports, music, leadership, community or public service, and the like.

“Last year, we had around 49 groups and 141 individual awardees, so that’s more than 141 youth who brought honor and pride to Ilocos Norte through their hard work and achievements,” explained Ventura,  “The Sirib Awards began because the Governor [Imee R. Marcos] wanted such youth to be appreciated by their home province and not only by external organizations or competitions.

“We do this not only to show our appreciation for them but also to inspire other young Ilocanos to face the national and international arena, para makita nila na kayang-kaya ng kabataan Ilocano na makiharap kahit sa global level.”

Sirib Awards was institutionalized through Provincial Ordinance No. 010-2016 sponsored by Senior Provincial Board Member Matthew Marcos Manotoc. Thus, even after the term of Governor Marcos, the Provincial Government will continue honoring young Ilocano achievers every February alongside the foundation anniversary.

The “Taray ni Ayat” fun run will then take place this February 17, an activity encouraging both physical fitness as well as the forming of relationships, as participants are given discounts when registering to run with groups.

Nominations or applications for the Sirib Awards should be either dropped off at the INYDO in Marcos Memorial Stadium, Laoag City, or e-mailed to [email protected] together with a photo of the original award, a photo of when the award was given, and certification that the nominee or applicant was awarded.

Inquiries about the “Tan-ok” literary competitions, “Taray ni Ayat,” and other youth affairs should also be forwarded to the address above.
