Ilocos solons urge planting of coconut trees

STO. DOMINGO, Ilocos Sur – Four congressmen in the llocos Region have encouraged the planting of hybrid coconut trees in their respective areas of responsibility.

Congressman Salacnib Baterina said the planting of hybrid coconut trees is very significant since this kind of product offers an alternative source of biodiesel.

“The coconut oil is even far richer and more abundant as compared to jetrophia and other locally produced source of oil. Besides, extracting oil from coconut needs a simple process,” Baterina, a native of this town, said.

Baterina added that there is a great need to plant a high-yielding variety of coconut trees even as he cited the coconut planting activities they have undertaken along the seashore of Magsingal town with Mayor Arlyn Favis.

Baterina went on official trip to Japan early last month to observe the coconut production scheme in the said country.

“The Japanese want a plantation type of coconut production; that’s why around 600 hectares of coconut plantation will be set for North Luzon in the next few months,” Baterina said.

Baterina said Congressman Eric Singson, Ilocos Norte Congressman Roque Ablan, Jr. and La Union Congressman Tomas Dumpit have also signified their intention to help promote the said project.
