VIGAN CITY – The people of Ilocos Sur looked back on the past with pride and honor when they gathered at the Plaza Salcedo in this city in the morning of June 12 to join the nation in its observance of the 120th anniversary of the Philippine independence.
In a message read by Board Member Gina Cordero, Ilocos Sur Governor Ryan Luis Singson shared his hope that the celebration will make Ilocanos reminisce the sacrifices of Filipino heroes to gain independence for all.
“Nawa ay mabuhay ang kanilang mga istorya ng kabayanihan at paulit-ulit nating maalala ang kanilang kadakilaan. Hinihikayat ko ang lahat na ipasa ang mga leksyon at aral ng ating nakaraan sa ating mga kabataan,” Singson said.
He said that the youth should know what these heroes have done to achieve the country’s freedom, so they will value it.
The celebration started with a mass at 7 a.m. at the Saint Paul Metropolitan Cathedral here, followed by a short program and the ceremonial laying of wreath or floral offering at the monument of Dr. Jose Rizal.
Participants in the occasion included provincial officials, department heads of the provincial government, faculty members of the University of Northern Philippines, and employees from various government agencies.
The Ryan’s Angels rendered an interpretative dance that entertained the crowd during the celebration. (April M. Montes-Bravo / PIA-1, Ilocos Sur)
