Candon City — The Heritage Province of Ilocos Sur hosts this year’s Regional Invention Contests and Exhibits (RICE) conducted by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in this city on October 15-17.
With the theme, “Science for the People: Inventions and Innovations for Sustainable Development”, the event aims to recognize the indispensability of the Filipino inventors in the Philippine society and in national economic development, said Mr Ramon Sumabat, provincial science and technology director of Ilocos Sur.
He said that RICE 2019 will feature exhibition of inventions, utility models, industrial design, and creative research. These are the works of researchers, high school and college students in the region that could possibly answer the needs of the community and the country. The areas of research can be in agriculture, forestry, natural resources, processing, energy, construction, transportation, health and medicine, information and communications, electronics and other natural sciences.
Participants to the RICE will come from four provinces of the region – Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, La Union and Pangasinan, and guests from Metro Manila
The activities on October 15 will include the opening ceremonies at the Center for Culture and the Arts to be led by DOST Regional Director Dr Armando Q Ganal and Engr Edgar I Garcia, director of DOST Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI); opening of exhibits at Candon Civic Center, judging of entries, robotics workshop and competition that will end on October 17; and training on basic research proposal preparation for STEM teachers that will end on October 16.
The October 16 events will include invent school program seminar workshop for elementary level that will end on October 17; forum on TAPI programs for inventors and researchers and the technology, and forum on IP programs for inventors and researchers. On October 17, there will be a seminar on Techno Transfer Law, and awarding of Robotics competition winners, and 2019 Division Invention Contest and Exhibits (DICE) winners.
Admission to the three-day event is free. Sumabat said that participants are urged to register at https://events.dost1.ph/rice. He noted that the students of the Philippine Science High School Region 1 Campus under DOST will actively join the event. The school is in San Ildefonso town in the first district of the province.
