CABUGAO, Ilocos Sur– This town was bagged the outstanding local government and agri-extension workers award for increased rice yield under the Agri-Pinoy Rice Achievers’ search.
Regional Executive Director Valentino C. Perdido, Department of Agriculture officer-in-charge, said the award is under the DA’s National Rice Program for increased productivity.
Cabugao won the award for helping in the development of rice production in Region 1 for 2013. It also met the following criteria of the awarding bodies namely increase in rice production, yield increment and production area over 2012 levels, amount of budget allocated to rice projects and initiatives, number of farmers assisted and extent of quality seed utilization.
The town will receive P1 million-worth of project grants while municipal Agriculturist Zenaida Andrada and Nereo Daproza, municipal rice program coordinator, were among the 500 extension workers who will receive cash incentive of P20,000 each.
Now on its third year, the search for the 2013 Agri-Pinoy Rice Achievers Awards (APRAA) seeks to commend the hard work and support extended by farmers, agricultural technicians and local leaders in increasing productivity and income among rice farmers.
It strengthens participation to rice production among local government units for giving recognition to highly performing provinces, cities and municipalities.
According to the DA, it will continue to conduct awards and contest to encourage the farmers and recognize them as the country’s unsung heroes.
The awards include model irrigators’ associations and agricultural extension workers for their contributions to the attainment of the department’s food self-sufficiency program particularly in rice production.
The evaluation for the awards covered the wet season from September 15, 2012 to March 15 2013 and dry season from March 16 – September 2013.
Awarding rites is tentatively scheduled on March 6, 2014 at the Resorts World, Manila.#
