LAOAG CITY – The provincial government of Ilocos Norte has displayed Ilocano talents from all over the province in its first, yet grandiose ‘festival of festivals’ dubbed as ‘Tan-ok ni Ilocano’ on Saturday, November 12.

Aimed to present a lively combination of age-old and contemporary festivals, Tan-ok ni Ilocano showcased the festival dances from the 21 municipalities and 2 cities in Ilocos Norte where the local government units performed their unique and distinct culture whether in products, history, religion, livelihood, creativity, natural heritage or a combination of such.

“Extensive groundwork was undertaken by our event organizers, and we aimed to make the festival a major attraction in the province each year, which must necessarily be distinct from any other festivities in the country,” said Gov. Imee R. Marcos.

According to Provincial Tourism Officer Ian Ree Raquel, the concept of the festival was born after his group along with Gov. Marcos witnessed the ‘Pasigarbo sa Sugbu’ festival in Cebu last August 13 this year at the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City.

“Gov. Marcos and the mayors of Ilocos Norte were inspired by the festive mood that the Pasigarbo of Cebu brings to its people. The governor and our LGU executives wanted to bring the same experience in our own province, thus the ‘Tan-ok ni Ilocano’ festival,” Raquel added.

In her Facebook and Twitter accounts, Gov. Marcos stated that the festival is a ‘major gathering of the people of Ilocos Norte in one big stage’.

“This is the biggest attempt yet to raise the bar in cultural performances in the province, boosting the Ilocano’s sense of pride, unity, and greatness,” Marcos added.

Simultaneous to the celebration of Gov. Marcos’ birthday on November 12, 2011, the Tan-ok ni Ilocano festival organizers opted to display the performances at the Ferdinand E. Marcos Stadium at 6 pm on Saturday for the comfortable viewing of the thousands of spectators of the show.

As expected, important political and business personalities in the country, and friends arrived early on Saturday for the birthday celebration of the governor.

Meanwhile, Regions I, II, III and CAR Tourism and Information Officers as well as national media outfits were invited to witness the festival.#
