Journalist killed in Pangasinan

BAGUIO CITY – On the early morning of November 10, a commentator of DWPR Radyo Pilipino Dagupan and columnist for Northern Watch became the 18th journalist murdered under the Duterte
government.

Motorcycle-riding men pumped six bullets to Virgilio Maganes’ body and head, causing his immediate death. The shooting happened in Villasis, Pangasinan, in front of his residential compound in Sitio Licsab, Barangay San Blas.

The victim, who turned 62 on November 7, survived an attempt on his life back on November 8, 2016.
Assailants on board a motorcycle shot him while inside a tricycle. He survived by playing dead. In an attempt to cover the real motive behind the attempt, the perpetrators left a sign near the crime scene that said, “Drug pusher huwag pamarisan.”

Maganes is the 190th member of the media murdered since the EDSA People Power restored democracy in February 1986.

In a statement, PNP Region 1 Commander PBGen. Rodolfo Azurin said they created Special Investigation Task Group Maganes to speed up the investigation and resolve the killing.

“As of now, we already have investigative leads, and persons of interest were identified through CCTV footage near the crime scene. Hopefully, the witnesses to this senseless killing will volunteer information that will lead to the arrest of the killers,” he said. ●
