LIVING TREASURE. Catalina Ablog of Mindoro, Vigan City, is still able to keep a sharp eye on the fine multicolored threads as she demonstrates the traditional way of weaving textile or “abel” to tourists at the Padre Burgos House – National Museum in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur. The 85-year-old artist learned the art of weaving at the age of fourteen from her mother. Her demonstration is part of the Abel Exhibit currently on display at the museum. October of every year is Museums and Galleries Month as decreed by Presidential Proclamation No. 798. This year’s theme is “Showcasing Cultural Diversity for Development and Peace,” acknowledging the role of museums and galleries in promoting respect for cultural diversity which is a vital component of development and peace in the Philippines.
