Zambales Rep. Mitos Magsaysay lauded the heroism of Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Alma Bella Guiao for putting her own safety on the line just to help fellow workers get out of harm’s way in the conflict ridden areas of Homs and Latakia, and said that her actions are testament to Filipino resilience and strength in the face of challenges and even danger.
“Women like Guiao are few and far between but it is a testament to her strength of character that she went to great lengths to save household workers caught in the middle of conflict to the Philippine Embassy in Damascus,” she said. “She went the extra mile when she could have just saved herself and not all people are willing to do that.”
Magsaysay, a Minority member of the Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs, said that Guiao, in being an OFW was already classified as a modern day hero but her actions have given a new meaning to the word.
“Individuals like Guiao who have sacrificed being away from their families in order to provide a stable future for their families, and care for the welfare of their kababayans abroad the same way, truly make us proud as a nation of our culture as Filipinos,” she said. “It is my sincerest hope that our other OFWs in Syria will take heart from Guiao’s actions and remain steadfast and solid as a community in order to stay safe from danger.”#
