LAOAG CITY — In partnership with the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN), the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) conducted a forum on responsible viewership titled “Para sa Matalino at Responsableng Panonood ng Pamilyang Pilipino” at the Provincial Capitol Auditorium and Northerwestern University (NWU) in Laoag City last May 11-12, 2018.
Topics comprising the forum included an information orientation on the MTRCB, followed by discussions on revised television and movie ratings.
Afterwards, they tackled the MTRCB review process and had a mini workshop on the board’s monitoring guidelines.
MTRCB board members Mr. Paolo Santos, Mr. Pablo “Bogie” Reyes, Atty. Marites Candido, and former chairperson Ms. Marisa Laguardia served as resource speakers for the event, which garnered around 300 participants from universities and youth organizations in the province, such as NWU and the Sirib Ilokano Kabataan Association (SIKA).
Santos in particular emphasized the social responsibility of viewers, saying that people should be critical and not mere spectators of what they see on television.
“Ang MTRCB ay hindi kayo – ang MTRCB ay tayo,” he emphasized.
Mr. Radz B. Bismonte, Media Incentives Desk (MID) officer of the Provincial Communications and Media Office (CMO), also shared, “Sa panahon ngayon, kung saan napakalaki ang impluwensiya ng pelikula at telebisyon, talagang kinakailangan ng ganitong mga information drive – something to give awareness and promote responsible viewing to fellow Ilocanos.”
Bismonte had been the main coordinator from PGIN for the MTRCB forum.
Meanwhile, Rogie U. Balino, SIKA vice president for operations, emphasized how media and television are a constant part of both personal and social life: “Mag-isa man tayo o kasama ang mga kaibigan o pamilya, alam kong patuloy tayong nanonood.”
Mr. Weenter Ventura, executive director of the Ilocos Norte Youth Development Office (INYDO), thus encourages the youth to take more responsibility for controlling and regulating what they consume from the media, as well as reporting any unwarranted content.
“Maaaring sila ang maging kasangga ng MTRCB sa pagkilatis ng mga napapanood sa telebisyon at sa mga sinehan. Dahil sa involvement ng kabataan sa social media, maaaring sila ang makapagbigay ng kumento o opinion sa mga pinapalabas,” he pointed out. (PGIN)
