Recognizing the contributions in various social development endeavors, the National Council on Disability Affairs and the New Vois Association of the Philippines, Inc. led the nation in the annual observance of the Deaf Awareness Week on November 10-16, 2016.
With this year’s theme, “One World for Deaf Inclusion in Society”, the celebration kicked off with a holy mass held at SM City Novaliches in Quezon City on November 10, followed by the “Search for “Mr. and Ms. Deaf 2016” participated in by students from the local government units (LGUs) in the National Capital Region.
The search showcased not only the looks of deaf people but also focused on their talents and capabilities to be advocates of their rights and contributors to national development.
The member-agencies of the National Working Committee (NWC) attended the celebration together with the deaf children and their parents, advocates and representatives from the 17 local government units in NCR.
Other activities for the week-long celebration and their venue:
November 11, 2016, – Consultative Dialogue with deaf/hard of hearing persons to tackle their priority issues and concerns (Department of the Interior and Local Government Office);
November 14 – December 2, 2016 – A Products and Services Fair spearheaded by the Quezon City Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office (Quezon City Covered Walk); Hearing assessments by Better Hearing Philippines in cooperation with the Center for Audiological Sciences (University of Santo Tomas and Quezon City PDAO);
November 14, 2016 – Personality Development for the Deaf, with “Wellness, Optimism and Happiness Among the Deaf” as the main topic (Department of Public Works and Highways);
November 15, 2016 – “Deaf in Toque” – cooking skills competition of deaf persons sponsored by ADSTONED Advertising Company (Inner Lobby, Main Building of the Quezon City Hall);
November 16, 2016 (Culminating Activity) – cultural presentation showcasing the various talents and skills of deaf persons (Forum Robinsons, Mandaluyong City).#
