CAMP BGEN OSCAR M FLORENDO — The traditional New Year’s revelry had been generally peaceful in the Ilocos region, this was the assessment of the regional police office here.
Police Regional Director Chief Supt. Constante D. Azares Jr. reported that the region had a peaceful New Year celebration despite a fire incident that happened in Pangasinan province that resulted in the loss of property amounting to P200,000.
The fire was reportedly caused by a firecracker.
Azares said only 66 persons were injured due to firecrackers, a tremendous decrease of 61% as compared to last year’s figures of 170 persons wounded and one dead.
The regional director said that the decrease of firecracker-related incidents was due to the massive campaign of the Department of Health (DOH) and Oplan Iwas-Paputok drive of the Philippine National Police.
“We were able to confiscate prohibited firecrackers amounting to P105,677.60. In San Fernando City alone, 1,064 packs of piccolo were confiscated amounting to P19,152.00,” Azares reported.
Azares expressed his gratitude to the community for its support and cooperation in the implementation of Oplan Iwas-Paputok. He cited the case of a violator who was arrested for indiscriminate firing after a barangay official immediately reported the incident to the police.#
