CAMP BGEN OSCAR M FLORENDO — The traditional New Year’s revelry was generally peaceful in the Ilocos Region, the Police Regional Office 1 headed by Police Chief Superintendent Franklin Jesus B Bucayu reported.
Bucayu confirmed that no death incident related to firecrackers was reported despite three gunshot-stray bullet cases in Ilocos Sur, La Union and Ilocos Norte provinces.
Bucayu said the total number of victims of firecrackers was 7% lower as compared to that of 2012.
“Majority of these cases were children aged 12 years and below that directly handled the firecrackers, while some cases were victims of illegal firecrackers,” the regional director said.
Bucayu attributed the decrease of firecracker-related incidents to the combined supervision of the Aksyon: Paputok Injury Reduction (APIR) Surveillance in Region 1 of the Center for Health Development, Health Emergency Management Staff, Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council 1 and the massive campaign of the Department of Health (DOH) and Oplan Iwas-Paputok drive of PRO1 hand in hand with its four police provincial offices.#
