NNC1 Reviews Nutrition Early Warning System Implementation

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – The National Nutrition Council Region 1 spearheaded The Nutrition Early Warning System (NEWS) – Program Implementation Review (PIR) held at Oasis Country Resort last February 6-7, 2018. This was attended by the 33 members of the NEWS team from the Municipalities of Tagudin, Ilocos Sur; Solsona, Ilocos Norte; Bayambang, Pangasinan; and the City of Alaminos.

Mr. Kendall A. Gatan, Nutrition Officer III of NNC-ROI presented the overview of NEWS and mechanics of the PIR where he emphasized that every area involved should have in-depth analysis on the quarterly results of the NEWS and the causes of high prevalence of undernutrition. He also stated that process should be done quickly to resolve the issues of malnutrition and discussed about the executive order and memorandum of agreement on NEWS.

Moreover, the concerned areas presented the status of NEWS implementation where common issues are the household food shortage and low diet diversity score or food choices. This contributed in the high incidence of undernutrition in the said areas.

Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC-ROI, Ms. Ma. Eileen B. Blanco stressed that the results should be discussed to the team and presented to the Local Chief Executives of each area, so problems could be properly addressed. She also added that the data should be analyzed in a simple way that decision makers can easily understand. She also reminded that the data collectors should be extra careful in gathering information.

Part of the activity is the assessment of 2017 implementation where the respective NEWS areas were able to identify the strengths and weaknesses for NEWS implementation including necessary actions to be done.

Mr. Gatan presented the synthesis and next steps with high hopes on the strengthened and sustained NEWS implementation for 2018. He summed-up the activity with the acronym NEWS that stands for

NEWS is a form of “watching over” or monitoring a community’s status with regards to food sufficiency. This will enable local officials to make early forecast based on current information trends; provide timely warning and interventions and identify affected households and vulnerable areas. CPF
