The Nutriskwela Community Radio Project of the National Nutrition Council was a brain-child of NNC Executive Director, Assistant Secretary Maria-Bernardita T. Flores and it was envisioned as a long-term and cost-efficient strategy to address the problem of hunger and malnutrition in the Philippines in line with current anti-hunger and anti-poverty programs of government.
This project involves the putting up of radio stations in the community which are non-profit and non-partisan where broadcast personnel are trained in areas of the country that have high prevalence of malnutrition and do not have easy access to broadcast media.
Through the Nutriskwela Community Radio, the community is empowered with the dissemination of correct and up-to-date nutrition and health information, as well as educational and developmental information from all relevant sectors of the community, government agencies, and non-government organizations.
In partnership with the local government units of Pandan, Antique in Region 6; Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay in Region 9; Kalilangan, Bukidnon in Region 10; Sibagat, Agusan del Sur in CARAGA; and Lagawe, Ifugao in the Cordillera Administrative Region, the first phase of the project was implemented in 2008 and five community radio stations were put up in those areas.
After two years, NNC implemented the second phase of the project and expanded by entering into a partnership with several state colleges and universities, and NGOs and installed 10 more community radio stations which included Radyo Kailian 97.3 MHz FM in Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur in Region 1; Radyo Kalugaran 97.7 MHz FM in Claveria, Cagayan in Region 2; Radyo Kaisahan Arya 107.7 MHz FM in Sariaya, Quezon in Region 4-A CALABARZON; Radyo Kasimanwa 97.3 MHz FM in Coron, Palawan in Region 4-B MIMAROPA; Radyo Kasanggayahan 95.1 MHz FM in Sorsogon City, Sorsogon in Region 5; Radyo Kaigsoonan 98.5 MHz FM in Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental in Region 7; Radyo Kasugbong 97.3 MHz FM in Catubig, Northern Samar in Region 8;Radyo Kalumonan 97.3 MHz FM in San Isidro, Davao Oriental in Region 11;
Radyo Katilingban 98.9 MHz FM in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat in Region 12; ken Radyo Komunidad 97.5 MHz FM in Isabela City, Basilan in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
These 15 Nutriskwela Community Radio stations are connected to the Internet. Each radio station is enabled to communicate and interact with their local constituents and with the world.
Secretary Flores said that the establishment of these radio stations would not have been possible without the support of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) for providing NNC the necessary licenses to operate and other permits. NNC was likewise assisted by its partner, MQ Mediazone Productions.#
