VIGAN CITY – A barangay nutrition scholar from Batac City is Region 1’s Regional Outstanding BNS for 2014.
Leizel C. Jose, a 26-year old Dev. Com. undergraduate who is the BNS of Barangay Barani, Batac City, received her award during the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony held at One Vittorio Hotel, Bantay, Ilocos Sur on October 2.
Jose serves as BNS of Batac City since 2012. With her perseverance and ability to learn fast, she was able to perform exceptionally well her duties and responsibilities as BNS.
Implementing the nutrition program is not an easy task. But with her good rapport and camaraderie with the members of the Barangay Nutrition Committee (BNC), espesially the Barangay Chairman, she gained their support for the implementation of the Barangay Nutrition Action Plan which included the conduct of supplementary feeding program for day care pupils, distribution of Vitamin A capsules and deworming tables, promotion of fortified foods and iodized salt consumption, distribution of seeds and plantings materials for backyard gardening to ensure food availability to the household.
Through her initiative, the following innovative programs were pushed:
1.Membership to Barani Meat Processors Association (BAMEPA) – This is an IGP of the barangay where 10% of their net income is shared to supplementary feeding of Day Care pupils and pre-schoolers including the provision of BNS supplies and materials.
2.Medical and Dental Mission during their annual barangay fiesta. Medical services included blood letting, FBS screening, BP monitoring and Dental check-up
3.Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is set up in the barangay. This is an additional IGP where recyclable materials are sold to augment funds for supplementary feeding.
- “Feed the Hungry” Barangay Program. This is a school-based feeding program financed by Don Basilio Foundation, a NGO partner of the barangay from Canada. This is part of the “Adopt a School Project” of the barangay.
5.Lumpianada and Gipang Production. Innovation of Batac Empanada and Gipang food products made in Barangay Barani. The products are attracting consumers because they are cheap and nutritious.
With her well-organized documentation of the best practices on nutrition activities, Jose was cited as the 2013 City Outstanding BNS.
For being adjudged as the regional outstanding BNS, Jose will represent Region I in the National Outstanding BNS Award.#
