The 38th National Nutrition Month Celebration spearheaded by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Regional Offices in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd) kicked off simultaneously nationwide on July 2, 2012 with highlights on gardening in schools and the importance of eating vegetables as part of the healthy diet especially among school-age children.
In Region I, the launching activity was held at the Lucao Elementary School, Lucao District, Dagupan City as the identified school being the Division’s Most Effective “Gulayan sa Paaralan Pagsasarili Program Implementor” in coordination with the Division of City Schools Office of Dagupan City.
The launching activity was attended by the members of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) led by its chairperson Dir. Myrna C. Cabotaje, Regional Director for Center for Health Development (CHD I); Division Nutrition Coordinator/Heads for Health and Nutrition Sectors of DepEd Division I, Dagupan City; faculty and pupils of Lucao Elementary School; Vice Mayor Belen T. Fernandez, City Councilor Brian Lim, City Nutrition Action Officer Leah L. Aquino (representing City Mayor Benjamin S. Lim); RONDA President Mr. Bernie R. Errasquin; Barangay Nutrition Scholars of Lucao District; Barangay Health Workers and others.
Ms. Rose Lulu P. Pagaduan, Nutrition Officer III of NNC ROI, led the opening prayer; Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Alma Ruby C. Torio of DepEd Division I gave her opening remarks and CNAO Leah L. Aquino inspired everyone to consume more on vegetables in her welcome address.
Regional Director and RNC Chair Dir. Myrna C. Cabotaje stressed the need to improve the nutritional status of every Filipino. She gave emphasis on two things: 1) Consumption of vegetables which are rich sources of fiber and 2) “Ugaliin kumain ng gulay” as they help to fight cancer and keep the person alert and active.
The Department of Agriculture RO1 turned over seeds to Education officials of DepEd Pangasinan Division I.
The ceremonial vegetable seed planting was participated in by guests and officials that included Dir. Myrna C. Cabotaje, Ms. Rose Lulu P. Pagaduan, NO III of NNC ROI, Dr. Rodolfo Jucutan of DepEd ROI, CNAO Leah L. Aquino, and others.#
