SAN FERNANDO CITY -From July 1 to 12, 2016 following the assumption of office of President Rodrigo Duterte last June 30, more than 4,150 drug personalities have surrendered while 228 persons involved in illegal drugs were arrested, the police regional office here reported recently.
Police Regional Office 1 Director Chief Superintendent Ericson T. Velasquez said the said drug personalities surrendered in various police stations while the 228 persons, most of them illegal drug users and drug pushers were arrested during the implementation of search warrants, Oplan Sita, buy-bust operations and other police responses.
Velasquez disclosed that for this period, 989 drug personalities surrendered in Pangasinan, 2,030 in La Union, 766 in Ilocos Sur and 401 in Ilocos Norte.
The regional director added that 134 persons were arrested in Pangasinan, 31 in La Union, 25 in Ilocos Sur and 38 in Ilocos Norte.
Seven drug personalities were killed in separate armed encounters in Pangasinan during the implementation of anti-illegal drugs operations, Velasquez said.
Velasquez said the number of drug surrenderees is still increasing as many signified their intention to surrender following the implementation of “Operation Tokhang” or house-to-house visitation of the Region 1 police of pushers and users who are in the drug watch list.
The Region 1 police has visited 2,659 houses during this period.
“TOKHANG” is coined from the Visayan words “toktok”, which means to knock and “hangyo” which means to request.
The drug personalities signed a pledge of commitment and vowed to change their ways and support the government’s intensified campaign against illegal drugs.#
