Opposition fears of election sabotage in Mindanao unfounded – Pimentel

Team PNoy senatorial candidate Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Sunday/March 24 dismissed as unfounded opposition fears that the current power shortage in Mindanao could be a prelude to a sabotage of the outcome of the automated election in the region.

“To insinuate that the administration is drawing up plans to rig the outcome of the May 13 polls is, to say the least, preposterous, considering that the Aquino government has been the proponent of the ‘daang matuwid’. President Aquino would be the last person to encourage that,” Pimentel said.

Pimentel dismissed claims by candidates of the opposition United Nationalist Alliance that groups out to sabotage the elections in Mindanao are likely to take advantage of the power outages given the fact that the precinct count optical scan machines rely heavily on power.

Without adequate power supply, the opposition claimed that the PCOS machines may fail to transmit results and could lead to a failure of elections.

“For the opposition to say that the administration could take advantage of the situation in Mindanao to rig the results of the May 13 polls is to me plain grandstanding,” Pimentel said.

“Team PNoy candidates can do better than that,” said Pimentel, who has established the Kontra Pandaraya Movement to ensure that every Filipino will be protected from all forms of cheating and corruption.

Pimentel said further the Commission on Elections and the Department of Energy have both made assurances that measures are now being undertaken to address the energy issues in Mindanao from now until 2015.

“The DoE has already made an assurance that Mindanao will have additional power by 2015 as indicated by committed projects in the region. Earlier, Aboitiz Equity ventures said Mindanao will be among the focus of the company in its P85-billion investments in the next four years,” Pimentel said.

Even the Comelec, he said, has made assurances that the PCOS machines could stand up to several hours of outages.

“For the opposition to say that the administration could take advantage of the situation in Mindanao to rig the results of the May 13 polls is to me plain grandstanding. They can do better than that,” said Pimentel, who has established the Kontra Pandaraya Movement to ensure that every Filipino will be protected from all forms of cheating and corruption. #
